WASHINGTON, DC— Today, Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski (IL-13) joined Congressman Brendan Boyle (PA-02) and Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05) for a press conference in collaboration with the MeidasTouch Network calling out the Republican scheme to rip off working families in the “Big, Ugly Bill.” The lawmakers highlighted how the bill would be one of the most regressive laws in decades, handing out massive tax breaks to the top 10% of earners while slashing resources for working families. The legislation, which passed the House in May, is currently being deliberated in the Senate.

“If this bill becomes law, those in the top 10 percent of earners get 68 percent of the total benefits of this legislation,” said Congresswoman Budzinski. “Families making over $700,000 a year will see a $12,000 boost, almost entirely from tax cuts. That figure does not even count the massive estate tax giveaways for the ultra-rich.

“Meanwhile, working families will experience a net loss in household resources. Shockingly, households making $23,000 a year or less are set to lose about $1,600 every year, mostly due to deep cuts to Medicaid and food assistance, and middle-class families will get next to nothing.”
